History/Origin
The Dobra was introduced in 1977, replacing the Portuguese escudo after independence. It was subdivided into 100 cêntimos. The currency underwent various inflationary pressures and was replaced in 2018 by the new Dobra (STN) at a rate of 1 new Dobra = 1000 old Dobras.
Current Use
The STD is no longer in use since 2018; the country now uses the new São Tomé and Príncipe Dobra (STN). The old STD notes are considered obsolete and are primarily of historical interest.
